ETTALONG BEACH, Australia, December 9, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – “When I unexpectedly received a package containing letters I’d written to my parents since boarding school, I took that as an omen and decided to pin it down originally thought in my memoirs that they might be of interest to my grandchildren, ”explains John Burgess. After several years and 1500 pages of data, he collected some of the material in a book entitled “Life, Happiness and Connections” (published by Xlibris AU).
Burgess had the advantage of growing up in perhaps the best decades in history – the 50s and 60s. Although New Zealand was far from the action during World War II, many generations of its parents were part of the ANZAC forces in Europe, North Africa, and the Pacific. After the war, there was a strong sense of freedom and anticipation in a young country with a rapidly growing economy. He benefited from growing up during this period of optimism; This was reflected in his school days, early farming, and later in his sailing adventures in the waters of the Pacific and Indonesia, as described in this book.
“I had read Barry Crump’s ‘A Good Keen Man’ when it was first released. Parts of my book are reminiscent of a similar time and way of life. I also share my experience at a leading private boarding school that uncovered a hierarchical cult that is no longer promoted in these institutions, which many were familiar with at the time but were too afraid to reveal, ”says Burgess. “Many readers will relate to the difficulties of father-son relationships, especially when they work together, and hopefully readers will enjoy the stories of my ocean heritage and sailing on American yachts. Every Kiwi (New Zealander) has a relationship with the ocean and would be interested in this aspect of my story. “
When asked what readers should take away from his writing of this book, Burgess replied: “We should be ready to make the most of the opportunities available to us. There may be setbacks, but believing in ourselves can fuel our personal growth. Life is an adventure. Seize the day! “You can find more information about the book at https://www.xlibris.com/en-au/search?query=Life%2C+Luck+and+Liaisons

About the author
After graduating from school, John Burgess worked in animal husbandry and later on a farm in southern New Zealand, often in freezing temperatures. With plenty of free time on the long winter nights before the advent of television and VHF radio, he decided to enroll in a year-long correspondence course at the London School of Journalism. He presented his first professional career to the editor of the New Zealand Herald’s supplementary newspaper The Weekly News and was asked to submit a weekly article based on his rural experiences in New Zealand and Australia. When he left New Zealand to join a yacht for a lifetime of adventure, the editor asked him to continue submitting weekly agricultural articles and writing about his travel experiences. On the way he wrote detailed letters to his parents – this boarding school education never left him entirely. His mother saved these letters, and it was the rereading of these and some newspaper articles written during the same period that inspired him to put down this account of his early life.
