Creator Collaborates With Elementary-Age Granddaughters to Create Vibrant Image Book That Explores the Wealthy Historical past and Tradition of Paterson, New Jersey

PATERSON, NJ, Oct. 19, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Founded in 1792 by George Washington and Alexander Hamilton, Paterson, New Jersey is an epicenter of industrial growth, cultural diversity, and natural wonder. Today, tourists from across the country and around the world travel to enjoy the grandeur of the famous Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park, but are often unfamiliar with the city’s expansive and important history.

In her new book, Colorful Journey, author and retired educator Jennifer Tiritilli Ranu guides readers through the experience of growing up in Paterson in the mid-20th century. The story, and Paterson’s story, is told by a 10-year-old African American girl named Sweety who meets a bossy groundhog with a fascinating proposition: If Sweety’s friend Giuliana, an artist, can guess his name correctly, he’ll take her and her playmates on one colorful journey through Garret Mountain.

After Giuliana guesses his name correctly, the marmot Butternut Yellow leads the pack through famous Paterson landmarks, including the parched Morris Canal Bank, the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, and the beautiful Lambert Castle on Garret Mountain. During the colorful journey, Sweety provides insights into the socio-economic and cultural conditions of the city, explains popular leisure activities of the children in the neighborhood, reflects on what the founding fathers would think of the changes in the city in the 1950s, and considers what developments were in the region will take place in the next century.

A native of Paterson who grew up playing on Jersey Street, climbing Garret Mountain to pick wild cherries, drink fresh cold water from a water source, and explore the Great Falls, Ranu wrote the book, to share the history of their hometown with a new generation of readers illustrate what childhood was like in the 1950s and remember other baby boomers about their shared experiences with teenagers. She worked closely with her granddaughters Giuliana and Karolina on developing the story and characters, and with sophomore William Paterson University Caleigh Snyder on the illustrations to ensure the book resonated with both younger and older readers finds.

An exciting educational tool for children, adults and seniors, the Colorful Journey provides an important lesson about one of America’s most historically significant cities and a unique opportunity for intergenerational bonding.
