“In past few weeks of lockdown living, I’ve felt a deep longing to be in the midst of nature. The forests, the mountains, the sea, I’ve craved them all. This longing made me realize that I never fully appreciated the freedom (and privilege) to experience the incredible beauty of our world. It equally made me dwell on my environmental footprint as an inhabitant of a shared planet. In the midst of a pandemic linked to deforestation, biodiversity loss and intensive animal farming, all roads seem to point towards a life that is more sustainable, compassionate and mindful. But will decreasing our individual footprint make any difference in the big picture? We only need to look at the past for inspiration. Many social and political transformations came about as a result of mass movements that began with individual awareness and personal choices. The more invested we become as individuals, the more likely we are to drive change as a society. For those of us not directly affected by the on-going crisis, this slowdown can be a chance to make small but lasting changes towards a more sustainable way of life.” 🌱 My latest blog post is about: Sustainable Living Ideas to Embrace as we Emerge Into a New “Normal”. Link in my profile @shivya or read it at the-shooting-star.com 🌱 Then tell me, what kind of longing have you felt during this lockdown? Have you made any environmentally conscious choices since this madness began? Or do you plan to?

“If people can’t imagine what climate change does, then they will do nothing about it,” says Vallangi. Absolutely thrilled to see this feature on @mongabayindia, a reputed environmental publication for the uninitiated. It was in January 2019 that I wrote my first story on Climate Change. It’s January 2020 and my thoughts on Climate Change are being written about(some more are in the pipeline😊). Many thanks to @kcmouli for the lovely feature that accurately decodes what we’re trying to achieve through the documentary along with some expert commentary on the challenges of climate change communication. . . . . — “How does climate change affect our daily lives? Why and how should we adapt to these changes? Answers to these questions could be daunting, but those are the conversations Neelima Vallangi and Deej Phillips want to spark through their documentary film, temporarily titled Demystifying Climate Crisis Through Human Stories. “The documentary specifically shows the human cost of climate change,” explains Vallangi, an Indian writer-photographer and the brains behind scripting and directing the film. In 2019, overwhelmed by the disastrous consequences of climate change in India and across the world, Vallangi started a series of conversations on the crisis on Instagram where she has over 45,000 followers. After sharing information on topics such as greenhouse gases, the fossil fuel industry, and climate justice and interacting with her followers, she realised that many don’t necessarily understand how a warming planet could affect them personally.” — What a ridiculously exhausting but fulfilling journey it has been! Given that climate crisis is not going to leave us anytime soon, I foresee the journey will continue on and take me places I’ve never imagined. And a big thanks to all of you for being such an important part of this journey!🙌🏽 Article link in bio, comments & stories.

When u are in the #Maldives the only surface, ur feet will ever touch are the silky ivory white sand beaches or the turquoise blue waters inviting u for a dive.⠀ ⠀ The Maldives, famous for its vibrant #CoralLife & rated as one of best #diving sites in the world, has suffered a loss of around 60 to 90 per cent of its corals since 2014. With the rising sea temperatures, they are either getting bleached or dying completely.⠀ ⠀ Scientists say by 2045 Maldives might not hv any #coralreefs. Their protection is critical for the island’s protection as Coral reefs provide shelter & food for the local fish population & are the first line of defence when sea storms hit. After seeing the underwater beauty, I can’t even imagine this to happen.⠀ ⠀ However, thr’s some hope – Maldives is working towards the development of effective coral protection & restoration efforts with the help of local communities & other stakeholders whose livelihood depends on tourism & fishing.⠀ ⠀ @adaaranhudhuranfushi has spearheaded the coral recovery programme with the help of marine lab team, staff & guests. So how exactly is it done?⠀ ⠀ As a gardener wld tk care of a patch of vegetables, marine biologists dive 2 to 3 times each day to grow underwater corals in ‘coral nurseries’. A fragmented piece of coral is taken from a big donor colony, put on ropes into a nursery, & with the right conditions, will continue to grow. Once the corals are around 10 cm wide & strong enough to survive in the big wide ocean world, they’re moved onto the reef and monitored every 3 months. The whole operation takes from 9 to 12 months to complete⠀ ⠀ So, as a #ResponsibleTraveller what can you do?⠀ 1) Bringing down ur carbon emissions⠀ 2) Stay at eco-friendly properties tht have programmes to protect the local communities & marine life⠀ 3) Help financially, the Maldives is not a rich nation. Every penny counts.⠀ ⠀ #beautifulmaldives #travelmaldives #AdaaranHuduranfushi #AdaaranResorts #aitkenspencehotelsandresorts #maldivesbeach #maldiveslovers #maldivesislands #maldiveslife #adaaranresorts #environment #globalwarming #savetheplanet #saveourplanet #environmentalist #savetheearth #IFlySrilankan #srilankanairlinesindia
