10 Steps to Finding Your Dream Job

Feb 4

Finding your new Dream Job or Career is never easy but it can help if you know where to start.

Which direction? What job can I do?

Create a list of Career Options that you think you would like to do and would really enjoy. Don’t limit yourself to only the ones that you can do. If you want to be an astronaut or have a business on eBay, then put this down. Once you have your list you need to do some research on how other people get into these careers.

Make Sure It’s Really What You Want to Do?

Lots of jobs sound brilliant from the outside but are actually very boring. I have a friend who is a body-guard to the rich and famous. He was telling me how he was taken by private jet to Mexico, stayed in the best hotels and went to a number of parties with all the top celebrities. He also told me about the time when he spent 18 hours a day for 8 days sitting outside a hotel room in London waiting for his client who did not want to leave the room because it was raining.

Think about the Skills that you have Learnt and What you are Good at?

Is there a cross over between the two, can you try before you buy, see if you can do some temporary work, try it part time, or maybe you can volunteer to shadow someone who is actually doing the job for a short while.

Sort Out Your CV

When was the Last Time you Wrote your CV/Resume?

Is it structured correctly or has time moved on to such an extent that what was in demand 20 years ago is no longer in demand now.  A good idea could be to have a chat with a recruiter, and send your CV to a  recruiter for advice.  They will typically be able to help you adjust your CV if needed.

Ask a Professional CV Writer to help you

I am not sure how much I agree with these, however If anyone can recommend a good one I would be happy to send some business there way. The last time someone offered me to write my CV they wanted 300GBP or 500USD which I thought was too much. A good professional Cv writer will be up to date with the technicalities of writing a resume.

Ask your Friends for Help

Give your CV to some of your trusted friends and ask them for advice. All the professional CV writers that I know will always make sure one of there colleagues reads a CV before its handed back to a client as after spending hours working on a CV, its very easy to miss a spelling or make grammar errors.

Include a Cover Letter

I still think they are a waste of time, however its a 50-50 choice and you cannot be wrong if you send a cover letter. Most importantly don’t just repeat what is already on you CV again on your cover letter.

Create a Marketing Pack or Video Resume

however watch out that you don’t over do it. Recently someone sent there sales resumes which had a sheep wearing pink boots on the front page. I was too busy laughing to go any further.

Check your Contact Details

How many times I have been sent a CV where the telephone number is a number short or the email address does not work!!  How am I meant to get hold of you!!!

Sort Out your Online Profile?

  • Get your CV Online – it looks really good if your resume is online and people can download it. Either use Linkedin.com or possibly your own personal website.
  • Use the right Document Format – PDF or Word is a must. Anything else and you run the risk that people will not be able to read it and therefore skip over it – Also never send your CV in Excel.
  • Use the right Keywords for your Online profile - so that when a recruiter or a hiring manager searches for candidates, yours pop’s up right at the top of the list.
  • Watch out What you Put Online - in your Social profiles as you need to present yourself in the best possible light and those pictures of you, very drunk in a night-club on a Tuesday night, might not be the best way to do this.
  • What’s your Email Address - Someone sent me an email today with their resumes.  The email address was Sexeydasha@!!  Not very professional and needless to say I did not reply!!
